Skin Irritancy Tests
Many skin irritancy tests are a level “E” on the USDA's pain scale, producing extreme pain to the animal. Skin irritancy tests coincide with the Draize eye test; most skin irritancy tests are called the Draize Skin Irritancy Test. The skin irritancy tests target mainly rabbits but can also target mice, rats, guinea- pigs, and sometimes even dogs. Sometimes for this test, part of the animal’s fur is shaved off so that researchers can see the animal’s skin. Researchers then apply whatever substance they are testing to the animal’s skin; then they wrap the exposed area in gauze. Researchers then come to look at the results many times. Throughout this period of time, however long it may last, the animal is given no pain killers. When researchers have concluded the test, they kill the animal because it cannot be used for future tests.
